My attention lately has been claimed by the present. With the hope, still lingering, that I might change a few minds, persuade a few right wing men to care about what is happening with ICE, or at least to look directly at the truth. It is a power I seem to possess, and I have come to believe it carries a responsibility.

This is a history Substack, but I do not want to leave it silent. So I write this history now, while it is still unfolding.

This too will be history.

Some Men Are Visual Learners

James is 60 years old, white, religious, loyal to Donald Trump, and very responsive to visual incentives.

I will update everyone on the results.

Authoritarianism. The right flinches at the wrong word. People locked in camps do not care who names the order. They are trapped inside a government’s concentrated power, enforced through coercion. This man was never going to get to that conclusion.

He needed an incentive that spoke to his lower brain.

The next man thinks carefully, and still arrives at fascism. Intelligence does not always correlate with wisdom.

Watching the Story Crack

Barry is younger than most of the men who message me, early thirties, sharp enough to follow the argument and certain it wouldn’t turn on him.

This story is longer than most. I kept it whole because the meaning isn’t in any single line, but in the way each choice leads to the next.

I originally thought about creating my own group chat for right-wing people stepping away from MAGA, or at least beginning to question ICE. Instead, I was invited into one that already exists. For now, I’m there quietly, watching, and pointing others toward it.

Doubt does not arrive all at once. Someone can question ICE and still carry the rest of the ideology with them, untouched. I’m cautious about placing myself in control of a space that could turn volatile, especially when opposition to ICE does not automatically mean opposition to other forms of harm.

I know some of you who saw Brooke America’s Facebook post were interested in joining something like this. If I decide she should start a separate group chat, I’ll reach out to those of you who want to help keep the space steady, intentional, and contained.
